The Betsy Lehman Center is an agency of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts charged with fostering a statewide program of research, data analysis, and information-sharing that engages health care agencies, providers, and consumers in initiatives to enhance patient safety. The Center was re-established under Chapter 224 of the Acts of 2012, An Act Improving the Quality of Health Care and Reducing Costs through Increased Transparency, Efficiency and Innovation. The Center receives operational support and shares office space with CHIA, the state’s Center for Health Information and Analysis.

The Betsy Lehman Center seeks a professional news editor and strategic thinker to oversee a new monthly publication and related Web content to support the Center’s communications efforts.

This is a part-time position with an expected start date on or about September 5, 2017; the weekly commitment will be between 10-15 hours. The successful candidate will have the option to work remotely, but is expected to spend at least one day each week attending meetings at the Center’s office in Boston. The contract will be through June 30, 2018 and there will be an option to extend it based on performance and interest.

This position will remain open until filled; The part time salary range for this position is $50 - $75/hour


You will be the key person responsible for driving the growth of our monthly e-newsletter Patient Safety Beat. You will ensure alignment of the newsletter’s content with the Center’s communications goals: raising awareness about key patient safety risks, sharing best practices, and bringing systems thinking to solve patient safety challenges across the care continuum. The publication’s content will speak to health care CEOs and board members as well as front line providers at a wide variety of health care settings across Massachusetts. And while the primary audiences are health care providers and policymakers, the publication’s language, tone, and narrative style are clear and accessible to all.

As editor, you will be responsible for developing an editorial calendar that is relevant and strategic, assigning and editing 3-6 articles of varying length each month to freelance writers. You will work closely with the Betsy Lehman Center’s staff as well as other stakeholders invested in improving patient safety and will also have the benefit of input from a small editorial advisory board of experienced health and communications professionals. Together, we want to generate good story ideas and draw attention to actionable patient safety news generated by state agencies, non-profits, and health care providers in Massachusetts.

You will shape a lively, readable balance of features, news stories, infographics, photos, video, and other relevant content and keep the publication fresh and interesting month by month. You will also be responsible for establishing and keeping to an editorial schedule and performing quality checks before sending the publication out each month. The editor reports to the Center’s deputy director.


  • Strong preference will be given to candidates with experience interacting with and developing content for health care providers, policymakers, payers, and other stakeholders in the medical and/ or public health field
  • Experience in health care quality, patient safety, quality improvement, or advocacy is preferred but not required
  • At least five years of experience in assigning and editing news stories and visual content
  • Deep experience thinking strategically about using editorial resources and outreach to further an organization’s mission
  • Demonstrated capability for editorial leadership, good news judgment and strong narrative skills
  • Experience cultivating and managing freelance writers
  • Project management skills and an ability to juggle deadlines
  • Comfortable in a team environment; able to take, as well as give, direction
  • Experience developing content for the Web, facility with content management systems and familiarity with social media required
  • Experience collaborating with diverse constituent groups
